What if we had a topic on characters where we could go to discuss our likes and dislikes of the characters in the books?

i think that is a good idea...... and also on that i think there should be lists of what different names in the books mean...............i looked up one or two of them and found out that mal foi (malfoy) means bad faith in french and that narcissa is the female form of narcissus who was the guy in greak mithology that was so in love with his own reflection......there were some others and i found it intersting that some of them fit with teh character and thought others may enjoy it as well!!!

Theres a site I came across somewhere I think its HP encyclipedia or something like that where they have gone through most of the names and spells explaining where they are derrived from most ancient greek and latin translations ... I think JK was a bit of a latin boff

I think she's a bit of an everything buff. most names comes from latin but some like herminoe comes from shakpheres winters tale. and lucious and corniluos are old popes. Legend has it pope lucious took over office after pope cornelious. So maybe that will happen in the books too.

Somehow I don't think Rowling designed Lucius Malfoy after a pope, although I could be mistaken, but I have a different opionion on who Lucius was fasioned after. Although its a good point and perhaps it will come into play. But that's just my thoughts.
Don't forget that one translation of Malfoy is "bad faith" but maybe that adds to the pope idea....its interesting to say the least.

Just read something else about Lucious and I don't know if its true either way but ....
Another interesting connection is that both Draco and Lucius (another Lucius, not the pope!) were overly harsh Roman lawmakers

That's really cool I don't know if the whole pope thing is where she got his name from. That whole lawmakers thing is prett cool too. but either way he is a very bad man..........course we already knew that.

I think it's really neat how people will research into these names and stuff. And I think you made your own topic for people to talk about the characters.  On Death-Curse.com there's a section where it explains about the people's names, and other coincidences. For example: Lupin's first name Remus, Remus and Romulus were abandoned and raised by wolves. Although later I think they ended up killing eachother but that's not important. And Canus Lupus is the "scientific""name for wolf. It's in the section where they have books then fun facts.
